“Le nozze di Figaro”
Piazza Mercato becomes an opera open air theatre with Le Nozze di Figaro.
The opera in four acts was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It was first performed on 1st May 1786 at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The opera, based on the play ‘La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro’ by Pierre Beaumarchais, is one of Mozart’s most famous and performed operas.

The libretto of the opera, written by Lorenzo Da Ponte, is a masterpiece of operatic dramaturgy. The text is full of twists, misunderstandings and comic situations that keep the narrative rhythm high.
Act I
The act opens with Figaro and Susanna, who are preparing for their wedding. However, the Count of Almaviva attempts to seduce Susanna, arousing Figaro’s jealousy. Various machinations follow to prevent the Count from realising his intentions.
Act II
The Contessa, the Count’s wife, tries to win back her husband’s love with the help of Susanna and Figaro. Intricate plans and mistaken identities develop, leading to numerous misunderstandings.
Act III
In this act, the trial of Figaro, who is accused by Dr Bartolo of not paying an old debt, takes place. The plots of the various characters become further complicated, but eventually plans emerge to resolve the issues.
Act IV
The last act sees the culmination of ingenious plots and deceptions. In the end, all misunderstandings are cleared up and the opera ends with a general pardon and the marriage of Figaro and Susanna.
